3,77% au pire, 7,15% au mieux, c’est la part de marché du navigateur web Mozilla Firefox en 2020. Très loin derrière Google Chrome qui est à plus de 65%, et dernier des 4 “grands” navigateurs qui sont Chrome de Google, Edge de Microsoft, Safari de Apple, Mozilla Firefox qui n’est pas un outil développé par les GAFAM, ne survit plus, il agonise. D’ici 5 ans, la Fondation Mozilla risque bien de jeter l’éponge et d’annoncer la mort de Firefox.
Je ne pense pas que Firefox soit réellement moins performant que les autres. Il est moins populaire que Edge et Safari seulement parce que ces deux navigateurs sont prélivrés avec deux systèmes d’exploitation célèbres: Microsoft Windows et Apple iOs. Par contre, Google Chrome a su profiter de la richesse de Google pour s’imposer.
Actuellement, un navigateur n’est plus simplement un outil qui permet de visionner un site internet, trop d’applications sont faites sur navigateur, sans besoin d’installation. Hier, un client m’avait invité à une visio-conférence sur Meet, de Microsoft. Rien ne marchait avec Firefox: pas de son, pas de video, pas de partage d’écran, juste le texte.
Même la version web de Skype ne marche pas sur Firefox, quand il m’arrive d’être en déplacement et que j’ai besoin d’utiliser Skype pour envoyer et recevoir des messages textes. “Browser not supported”.
Et Widevine, la technologie de cryptage qui vous autorise à regarder Netflix sur un navigateur, c’est une technologie propriétaire opaque de Google que Firefox emprunte pour pouvoir afficher les videos Netflix ou Amazon Prime Video. Firefox n’est plus qu’un ombre et ne pourra pas satisfaire les besoins d’un utilisateur d’internet. A un certain moment, il faut avouer la défaite, il faut accepter la mort.
